Topic 1 Introduction

  • Healthy lifestyle, as the concept is applied today, implies personal responsibility when failing to live up to society’s standards for exercise and diet. However, when communicating with persons who need advice about healthy lifestyle, it is important to consider their life, relations and previous experiences, not only assess how often they exercise and how many calories they consume. Although the environment (parents, school, peers) influences obesity, a WHO report (2016) emphasizes that pediatric care professionals are equally important supervisors. These professionals need tools to make health communication to work effectively.
  • This unit will focus on different communication approaches and tools that can be applied by healthcare providers in efficient consultations with parents and children.
